I've never looked through the Woody Liana Shop without coveting pretty much everything, and today is no exception. Liana has a great eye for fabrics and her sewing is impeccable. Here are some of my favorite picks from the current lineup:

expedit with a twist

This beautiful IKEA hack popped up on my Pinterest feed yesterday. It is three 1 x 4 Expedit shelves, with one turned to the side. The shelves were a few inches too wide for the space, so they rotated the end unit to fit. What a happy accident! I adore the shape of the blackboard.

This whole little nook is really cute--I love the clean styling and the neutral textures.

three rules of pinterest etiquette

While I was at home this weekend, I set up a Pinterest account for my mom. As I was teaching her how it works, I thought of a few little rules of "pinning" etiquette that would make Pinterest even more user-friendly and awesome.

1. Pin from the post, not the blog.
Let's say you want to pin the "3 Rules of Pinterest Etiquette" graphic from the top of this post. If you pin the image from the main page, that pin will forever link to the main page, not to this specific post. Always make sure you click on the title of the post before you pin--that way, you're no longer on the main page, you're pinning directly to the permanent URL for this very post.

2. Describe what the pin actually is.

I've done it a million times, too-- you describe your pin with your emotional reaction or a kind of non-specific word rather than what the pin actually contains. But it would be infinitely more useful to describe the pin so it is searchable!

3. Credit the creator.

I understand not writing "by Martha Stewart" in the description if the picture itself is watermarked with MARTHASTEWART.COM and the link is directly to the page on Martha's website. That source is pretty obvious. But for a lot of art and interiors, the creator is being featured on someone else's site. It's helpful to include the artisan's name in the description so it can be searched and so they get the credit for their work.

You can look through my Pinterest boards and find a hundred times I didn't follow my own rules (all of the good/bad examples above are mine!). But I am learning and trying to be more accurate and responsible.

wedding weekend.

What a weekend! I have spent the last few days in my home state of Utah for a friend's wedding--isn't her fuchsia and peacock color scheme pretty? I have had such a fun time with my family and friends... back to work tomorrow!

aqua and coral bedroom design

My client Amy wanted help making her master bedroom into a light, crisp, relaxing spot for mom and dad to unwind. Our inspiration was the pretty coral and aqua color palette against a calming greyish-blue. Isn't the floral print beautiful? It's "Formosa" by Waverly, in the Gardenia colorway and it's less than $20 per yard!

violins as art

When I was younger, I took violin lessons at a violin maker's shop. I loved waiting in the demonstration room, which was filled with beautiful instruments. I thought they looked so amazing hanging there.

I'd love to buy a violin again one day, even just to hang up!

current project: the "fish house"

One of my current clients, Laura, has the craziest installations you've ever seen in her living and dining rooms--AMOEBAS!

Laura's husband is in the U.S. military, stationed in Poland, and the family is renting a house there for a few years. Her kids nicknamed it the "Fish House." The amoebas (and the wavy archways, wood, rounded walls, etc.) were put there by the owner and have to stay. They don't go with Laura's style in the least, but we are trying to create a wonderful space she loves despite it all!

This is definitely the craziest design challenge I've come across yet!

audubon prints

I love botanicals, but the nature-inspired art that really gets me are Audubon prints.

In the 1800s, John James Audubon painted hundreds of birds (and later, mammals) and published them in his book Birds of America. They are painted mainly in watercolor, with some other paints to accent.

The original book is HUGE and sold at auction for $10 million last year—the world’s most expensive book! You can buy a smaller version online for much less than that. Truth be told, the thought of ripping up that book to frame a print kind of horrifies me! Luckily, reproductions of individual paintings are easy to find.

I think a couple of these would look good in my bedroom. The colors, boldness, clarity, movement…

more bedroom progress: headboard and mirror

Guess who almost finished her master bedroom this weekend? I'm two lamps, curtain panels, and some nightstand styling away from DONE. Here is what I have so far:

I installed the zebra headboard I made. It was a really simple project, and its exactly what I wanted for the space. The fabric is chenille, so it has great texture. You can buy it online here.

After putting up the headboard, I planned where to hang my sunburst mirror ($25 from Target) by putting up a strip of painter's tape the same size as the mirror's diameter.

The mirror is now up! I am this close to finished--I'll show you the whole thing soon!

november: paris!

I am so lucky and excited to spend Thanksgiving in PARIS this year with my husband, parents, and siblings. I can't wait to take in all the architecture, gardens, art, and pastries!

I'm sure we'll have no trouble visiting all the touristy places. But I'd also love to find some little hidden away places and quiet streets and shops-- you know, the Parisians' Paris. And maybe somewhere to get good art, antiques, and fabric!

zebra headboard project

This week, I finally got around to making a headboard for my bedroom! I am loving the result-- it's zebra, my favorite! I already had two beautiful prints on my bed that I wanted to be the focus, so the headboard needed to be subtle. Zebra is usually anything but subtle, but the sandy colorway kept it in check.

My friend Mallory and I worked together, following this tutorial and pictures from Casa Sugar. The only differences between mine and the tutorial are the fabric and the number of rows of nail-head trim. I also measured and drew little lines on the fabric to make sure the trim was (mostly) straight.

I still have to move the headboard to the bedroom and install it... stay tuned next week!
